Deep Dream

Video (30:00 min), 2020

The developer of Deep Dream, Alexander Mordvintsev, started the first run of the program at two in the morning, after waking up from a nightmare. The first image he fed the system was the kitten sitting on a tree stump. Deep Dream is a computer vision program created by Google, that uses a convolutional neural network to find and enhance patterns in images via algorithmic pareidolia, thus creating a dream-like hallucinogenic appearance in the deliberately over-processed images. No matter if you are an algorithm, a housefly, a conscious being, or a physical computation of emergent behavior, the most important part is actually the disappearance.
